Announcement: Project Black & Blue
The world’s moving so fast, the man who says it can’t be done is interrupted by someone doing it. - Elbert Hubbard 2010 will be the 6th straight year that I’ve been shooting solely in Alaska. In truth, it feels as if I’ve just arrived. Everything is still new and fresh to me, even though I have experienced it (whatever “it” is) several times now, in most cases. I’ve witnessed glaciers calving, both from a boat and from just across a raging river. I’ve seen humpback whales hurling their 40 ton bodies into the air, then the added blessing of seeing young whales being nurtured by mothers. I’ve watched pods of orca actively hunting, and sea otters frolicking in water so close that I could literally reach out and...

"Dere Be Whales Here!"
Another trip to Seward, another epic adventure. Joined my friends at Kenai Fjords Tours on another “Captain’s Choice Tour“. We spent the day plying the waters outside of Resurrection Bay. There were several photographers on board; both local Alaskans as well as first time visitors to our amazing state. It was great to shoot along side them and stretch our creative muscles – pushing and prodding each other for tidbits. There was the usual jesting involved & everyone took it very well. Good people all around, and a great captain and well… captain. We got 2 captains for the price of 1! Because they were only running one boat yesterday, we were lucky to have a second captain on board to serve as the deck hand. They switched on and off...
Rain + Clouds = Great Photo Ops
Well that’s a different take on weather conditions, especially coming from a photographer. Photographers, myself included, typically seek out beautiful weather, beautiful sunsets, and beautiful sunrises. Brightly lit and colored clouds, warm light everywhere. Most “photogs” would probably take it 25-8-366 if it was offered. BORING! I got up fairly early on Saturday and made the drive Seward, where a friend had made arrangements for us to take a 4-hour gray whale tour in Resurrection Bay. Leaving Wasilla, the weather was pleasant and partly cloudy. But by the time I made it to Girdwood, it was sprinkling lightly on and off. This would be the theme for the day. Time to make lemonade from the lemons that the weather gods were handing out....
On Remaining Flexible
I can’t touch my toes. Heck, I can’t even get close. Knees, sure I can get to those. But below the ankles, not even on a good day. Oh look, we’re only 4 short sentences in, and Dave’s already lost it. I would counter that it is difficult to lose something when you didn’t have it to begin with. When I brought up flexibility, I was speaking metaphorically – not anatomically. What happens when you don’t get what you want? In life? In profession? In travel? In photography? It’s frustrating, I’ll be the first to admit. But it is NOT the end of the world. It’s an opportunity. The Japanese use the same word for crisis and opportunity. I have become more familiar with this phrase lately. I have accepted it, and...
