I’ve gotten quite a few requests for an action I made that runs a customized “High Pass” sharpening routine on an image. Up until now, I’ve just sent it via emails to interested photographers. I’m going to make it available for download (for free) right from here. How ’bout them apples?
The action builds a separate “duplicate” layer and runs the action on that one, leaving your other alterations intact. *Note: If you have a single layered file, you will need to add a layer for the action to run – even a blank new layer will work just fine. Once the action is complete, you will NOT see any difference in your file, because I have incorporated a layer mask into the end of the action and filled that layer mask with black – veiling the sharpening. I did this so you can “paint in” the sharpening effect where you want it. If you want the sharpening to appear globally, just fill the layer mask with white and viola, blammo your entire image is sharp. I set the high pass to a value of 4, you can always go back and set your own value if you like – this has been a good average for my needs. If it is too sharp, you can also just lessen the opacity of the “High Pass” layer. Pretty slick, if I do say so myself.
Let me know if you have any questions, I’m happy to help!

Dave,
Appreciate you making this available. I specially like the idea of being able to paint in the sharpening.
thanks!
Mark
My pleasure Mark. I hope that you and others find it helpful. Take care & stay in touch.
I am in love with this sharpening action! Thank you so much – I’ve used it exclusively for the past week and would happily delete the other sharpening actions I regularly use. Very happy – Thank you:)
